Personal

I am Remi, born in 1990 in Utrecht, the Netherlands. I like to look at the world with a smile, but that doesn’t mean I laugh away the more serious matters. Staying positive actually helps me process the difficult things in life.

I feel at home behind my PC, where I play games or search for information on all kinds of topics. But I also enjoy being around people—whether it’s sharing stories or quietly observing from the sidelines.

The way the world and humanity function has always fascinated me—the motivations of both individuals and masses, the differences in norms and values in personal and impersonal interactions, and the thought patterns we are often unaware of. These are all things worth reflecting on.

In one way or another, I always want to feel like I am moving forward and growing as a person. To do this, it’s important to be able to let go of certain thought patterns so that new ways of thinking can take their place. This is often hard to do, but definitely worth it.

Transgender

Being transgender takes you to places and experiences far beyond your comfort zone—but they are incredibly valuable lessons. It makes you resilient and teaches you what it’s like to be part of a minority. It shifts your perspective on life in a way that only a truly unique experience can. In the end, it’s about being able to be who you are, in a world that doesn’t always make that easy. Still, I believe that having to fight for something makes achieving it even more fulfilling.

What it truly means to be transgender, and how it feels, is something you can only understand if you are. The discomfort that flows through your entire body. The sense of misplacement in intimate moments. A constant, nagging imbalance running through your mind. These are all uneasy feelings that stay with you constantly.

When those moments come and you start experimenting with seeing yourself as the other gender, everything falls into place after all. A body that begins to feel like home again. The weight of life slowly lifting. Your reflection in the mirror finally looking back at you with recognition. “I see who I am.”

Storytelling

What could be more delightful than leaning back in a chair and listening to a story? A story about a subject you know nothing about. The storyteller is an open book, and you are the blank pages. There’s a certain peace in knowing the storyteller has the time to build up the narrative, allowing every nuance to add depth to the meaning of the ending. There’s no need to ask questions—you trust that, in the end, every word will come together to form a complete picture.

The story takes you to a place or a culture unfamiliar to you. This unfamiliarity is freeing. You don’t need to form an opinion or analyze; you only need to listen and imagine.

I believe the power of storytelling is often underestimated. Even stories that aren’t absolute truths but are based on personal experience can enrich our lives and broaden our perspectives. They train our minds to remain open to new ideas. And perhaps, if we learn to listen to each other’s stories, we can foster more understanding and less judgment in the world.

Because in the end, every person is just that—a human, with their own story to tell.
